Woodland Management - Spring 2015

By Mike Rushton 12th April 2015 Well, after a sluggish start to the year with regards to managing our rented woodland, we have smashed on and cleared out all the dead, dying and dangerous trees in a popular area of our woodland. A lot of the timber was very rotten and has been stacked, along with the brash, in neat windrows throughout the area.
The good timber over 300mm in diameter will be planked in-situ for tables and benches, anything under this size will be processed into firewood for the landowner and for use in camp. The wind has had a field day with the taller Spruce and Larch, causing several windblown which have been processed.
However, this has let more light into a mixed area of trees. Plants that I have not seen in that part of the wood are taking hold with a lot of self set trees flourishing too.
The woodland management plan will kick in again at some stage in October this year as soon as we are satisfied that all the nesting birds have finished. I am looking forward to this years growing season to see how the woodland progresses and what new delights show their faces.
